What is seed cycling? What are the benefits of seed cycling?

Seed cycling is a daily practice that involves incorporating specific combinations of four seeds into your diet to support overall hormonal health. The routine typically involves eating 1 tablespoon (tbsp) of flax seeds and 1 tbsp of pumpkin seeds during the follicular phase of your cycle, followed by 1 tbsp of sunflower seeds and 1 tbsp of sesame seeds during the luteal phase.

This practice is believed to help support your body in maintaining a natural balance during different phases of your cycle. Many people report experiencing improvements in common menstrual discomforts, such as period cramping and variations in bleeding intensity. Some also find it beneficial in reducing premenstrual symptoms (PMS), including headaches, mood changes, breast tenderness, and digestive issues. Seed cycling may complement other lifestyle practices to promote better skin health, sleep quality, and energy levels.

For those preparing for pregnancy, seed cycling is often mentioned as a gentle way to support overall well-being during this time. Additionally, it may be incorporated into the routines of peri-menopausal and menopausal women seeking dietary strategies to manage menopausal symptoms.

Seed cycling is often included in the lifestyle approaches for individuals managing conditions such as PCOS and endometriosis, as part of a broader wellness plan.

Besides these potential benefits, seeds themselves are highly nutritious and a valuable addition to a balanced diet. Including them in your daily meals can provide a natural source of essential nutrients, and there’s no harm in enjoying them regularly!

How to determine the follicular and luteal phase (phase 1 & phase 2) of my cycle?

The new research studies (123) show that we can’t really standardise a breakdown of the menstrual cycle. A common belief that ovulation occurs almost always on the 14th day of the cycle proves false. In reality, ovulation occurs on different days for different women. This also makes the length of follicular and luteal phases different for every woman.

That’s why you need to get familiar with YOUR cycle. A cycle tracking app can help you keep records of the changes in your body and mind.

It is easy to determine the follicular phase (phase 1) since it always starts with the first day of menstrual bleeding. It can be a bit more challenging to find out when you step into the luteal phase (phase 2). The follicular and the luteal phase are separated by ovulation. Consequently, the luteal phase is the time period between ovulation and the start of the next menstrual bleeding. You can observe that you are ovulating by physiological symptoms such as a slight increase in body temperature and a more slippery vaginal discharge (similar to the texture of egg whites). Some women also experience a short-term pain on one side of their low stomach once the egg is released from the ovary. Moreover, when you are ovulating, you can also experience increased libido, improved verbal skills, and a sharper mind. You can read more here about other possible symptoms during ovulation.

How to eat Moonchy Bars if my menstrual cycle is irregular / I lost my period? Can they help me regulate my cycle?

First of all, don’t let anyone tell you that only a 28-day menstrual cycle is “normal” and “regular”. The truth is that a normal cycle length is between 24 to 38 days (1). What’s more, relatively small fluctuations in the cycle length are also normal.

So, what is an irregular cycle? The cycle is considered irregular if it is shorter than 24 days or longer than 38 days or if the length of cycles varies greatly.

If you are experiencing irregular cycles or not getting your periods at all, we advise you to give your body love and time to heal naturally and find its natural rhythm. Take care of your body and mind. An anti-inflammatory diet + gentle workout routine + less stress + enough sleep can really do wonders. And Moonchy Bars can obviously support this process. Our bars are full of many essential micronutrients and healthy fats that can help promote timelier and more regular ovulation, thereby bringing your cycle back on track.

You can start straight away with Moonchy Bars Phase 1 on any day. You can either eat our bars daily or every few days. But if you want to regulate your cycle, we advise you to practice seed cycling also on the days you don’t consume Moonchy Bars. After 14 days switch to Moonchy Bars Phase 2. And after another 14 days, start again with Moonchy Bars Phase 1 and so on. Just follow a 2-week rotation plan. This way you are nudging your body to follow a 28-day rhythm.

You can also try to sync your cycle with a lunar cycle since the moon cycle and an average menstrual cycle are almost equal in length. The full moon corresponds then to ovulation and the new moon to the first day of your menstrual bleeding. Following this logic, start with Moonchy Bars Phase 1 at the new moon and switch to Moonchy Bars Phase 2 at the full moon.

Can Moonchy Bars bring me benefits if I’m peri-menopausal / post-menopausal?

We believe that Moonchy Bars can be a nourishing addition to the diets of both menstruating and menopausal women. The seeds in our bars are a natural source of nutrients that may support overall well-being during and after menopause, particularly when estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate. For example, sesame and flax seeds have been studied for their potential to support hormonal balance and contribute to the quality of life for peri-menopausal and post-menopausal women.

Some research suggests that flaxseeds may help reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flashes and support vaginal health (123). Similarly, sesame seeds may positively influence blood lipids, antioxidant status, and hormone balance during menopause (4).

Beyond seeds, Moonchy Bars also include superfoods like Maca and Ashwagandha. Maca has been linked to reduced menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes and disrupted sleep (5). Ashwagandha is known for its adaptogenic properties, which may help reduce stress and promote a sense of calm (67).

Seeds and superfoods are packed with vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial compounds, making them a powerful addition to your diet. Enjoying them regularly is a simple way to support your well-being -without overcomplicating things!

Can I eat Moonchy Bars when I'm pregnant / postpartum?

During pregnancy, your hormones follow a different pattern, with estrogen and progesterone steadily increasing throughout this time. As a result, seed cycling is generally unnecessary during pregnancy. However, you can still enjoy Moonchy Bars occasionally as a healthy and delicious snack, without the need for a specific schedule.

Pregnancy increases your body’s demand for various micronutrients (1). Nourishing yourself with a nutrient-dense diet is essential to support your health and reduce the risk of complications. Moonchy Bars can be a part of a balanced diet, as they are a source of key nutrients such as magnesium, copper, zinc, iron, and selenium. The Phase 1 bars are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for baby’s development (234). Additionally, the significant amount of fiber in our bars may help support digestive health and ease pregnancy-related constipation.

After childbirth, your hormone levels, particularly estrogen and progesterone, drop significantly, and it can take around six months for your hormones to stabilize. Moonchy Bars may support your post-pregnancy journey, including helping your body transition back to its regular cycle after the postpartum period.

That said, during and after pregnancy, it’s always important to consult your doctor about your diet and nutritional needs to ensure you and your baby are well-supported.

How soon will I start experiencing improvements?

Each one of us is different. We differ in our body sensitivity, health condition but also in a level of expectations. That’s why we can’t guarantee you when exactly you can start noticing positive changes. Some women may start seeing improvements already in the first few weeks, others may need to wait a bit longer, up to 3-6 months.

The truth is that natural solutions aren’t a quick fix. You need to give your body some time to find its natural balance. Our mission in Moonchy is to make you feel more in tune with your body, therefore, we would like our bars to be a positive stimulus for you to work on that goal. Even small steps make a big difference, so start making healthy choices. An anti-inflammatory diet + gentle workout routine + less stress + enough sleep can definitely speed up positive results.

What happens if being on the pill?

You can absolutely still enjoy Moonchy Bars while on the pill! However, it might be a bit trickier to track your cycle and notice specific results. The pill works by stabilizing key hormones like estrogen and progesterone, meaning they don’t fluctuate as they would naturally.

Since seed cycling is designed to support the natural rhythm of hormonal changes, its effects might be less noticeable when you're on the pill. That said, Moonchy Bars are still a great source of essential macro- and micronutrients, so you’re nourishing your body regardless.

If you’re interested in aligning with a cyclical rhythm, seed cycling with the moon is a good alternative. This approach mimics the natural ebb and flow of a cycle, which could also make the transition smoother when coming off the pill.

At Moonchy, we’re all about finding what feels good for you. Whether you’re on the pill or not, enjoying our bars is always a delicious and nourishing choice.
